Reports of road rage identified Haggans

BRIGHTON, Colo. — Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Clark Haggans has been sentenced to 10 days in jail for driving while impaired.

Haggans pleaded guilty on Thursday to the charge, said Steve Bernard, assistant Adams County district attorney.

Haggans originally faced the more serious charge of drunken driving and driving without a driver’s license.

He was arrested in the north-Denver suburb of Federal Heights June 21, 2003, after reports of an incident of road rage. Police said there was a confrontation between occupants of two cars and Haggans allegedly got out of one vehicle and started chasing someone.

Bernard said police suspected Haggans had been drinking.

Haggans’ sentence, which Bernard described as standard for first-time offenders, includes six months of probation and 24 hours of public service. The jail time can be served out of state.

A hearing is scheduled Aug. 31 to review his case.

“He probably won’t have to show up if he’s done everything,” Bernard said.

Authorities said Haggans’ blood alcohol content was 0.24 percent. The state’s drunken-driving threshold is 0.10 percent.

Haggans is a Colorado State University graduate.
