Contrary to State Department remarks this week, there is ample precedent for lifting the diplomatic immunity of someone facing potentially serious criminal charges in the United States. Immunity was waived three times in 1996 alone for diplomatic personnel charged with drunken driving, State Department officials said yesterday, as well as the last time a member of the foreign diplomatic corps was involved in a fatality.
