Ferguson suspended two games after DWI citation

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Guard Eric Ferguson, suspended from the Arkansas basketball squad after being given a drunken-driving citation, will return to the team in time to see action in Monday night’s Maui Invitational game against Connecticut (No. 2 ESPN/USA Today, No. 3 AP), Razorback coach Stan Heath said.

Ferguson was charged Nov. 6 by Springdale, Ark., police for driving while intoxicated and careless and prohibited driving, both misdemeanors. He pleaded not guilty Thursday and has a court date set for Jan. 20.

Heath suspended Ferguson for two games — an exhibition contest and Friday night’s season opener against Portland State, which the Razorbacks won 107-69. Heath said he would decide after the Portland State game if Ferguson would return to the squad for Monday night’s game in the Maui Invitational.

The coach said Sunday that he and Ferguson had a “heart-to-heart” talk Saturday.

“I think we’re in the business to help kids, to educate kids, and that’s the approach we’re going to take,” Heath said.
