The trend is getting better, but San Juan County still has a long way to go to improve its unwanted status as a high-incident drunken driving county. In 2001, 30 people died on San Juan County roads in alcohol-related traffic accidents. The number improved slightly in 2002, when 29 lost their lives in DWI crashes, followed by 26 drunken driving fatalities in 2003.
