Driving while intoxicated continues to be the top factor in fatal car crashes in North Texas, and speeding ranks a close second, a review of Texas Department of Public Safety statistics has found.

From January 1995 through November 1999 - when public education about the effects of speeding and drunken driving intensified - the percentage of DWI- and speeding-related deaths remained virtually constant.

The impact of those numbers came into sharper focus in a span of 36 hours
