For the past two months, Jacklyn Gomez has filled the hole in her 11-year-old life with books about death. Since she watched her two older sisters die in a crash involving a motorist with a history of drunken driving, Gomez and her mother have replaced bedtime stories with books on grieving, loss and recovery.

The books have helped: She no longer imagines that her sisters are nearby, and the dark shadows that once crawled through the house have faded. Now, only questions haunt her.
