David Flaherty Jr., the district attorney for Catawba, Burke and Caldwell counties, has been charged with driving while impaired after authorities say he rear-ended a car near Lenoir. Flaherty was headed south on U.S. 321 about eight miles north of Lenoir at 2:15 a.m. Saturday when his 1991 Buick rear-ended a car slowing for a right turn, N.C. Highway Patrol Sgt. Jeff Winstead said Sunday.
